Financial strain brought on by post-divorce family law issues

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2019 | Divorce, Family Law |

The divorce process can be very tough in terms of one’s finances, but even after a marriage has been brought to an end various financial concerns may linger. Months and even years following a divorce, some people run into financial difficulties that threaten to derail their lives, whether they lose their job without warning or they suffer an unexpected health crisis. To make things more complicated, some have financial obligations that involve family law matters, whether they have to pay alimony or are required to make child support payments, which can place a great deal of strain on their finances.

Missing child support payments is no joke since this can lead to a variety of hardships. Having one’s wages garnished or being unable to receive a tax refund has placed a considerable financial strain on many parents, and there are other reasons why post-divorce issues can lead to financial troubles. For example, some people may need therapy or counseling due to a difficult divorce and an unfavorable custody outcome that affects their relationship with their kids. Some people may also need to pay legal fees because they have to return to court for a particular family law issue.

The good news is that there may be options for people who are facing these hurdles. For example, some parents have been able to modify their child support order as a result of significant financial changes that have occurred. This can not only lessen the burden of child support payments but possibly prevent the numerous consequences that come with falling behind on these payments.
